Unlimited space on Google Photos will no longer be free

Google Photos will stop offering unlimited space for free from June 1, due to a change in its storage policies. Therefore, if you are a user who has a free account on the platform, you will only have 15 GB of space.

While the company offered this service for high-quality photos and videos for five years, it all comes to an end. The determination was made, according to the company, because the platform stores more than 4 billion photos.

In this way, as of Tuesday, all the photos and videos that are uploaded to Photos will occupy part of the 15 GB of storage included in all Google accounts, which are distributed between services such as Drive, Gmail and Photos itself.

Although it must be taken into account that the images uploaded with the Google Photos compression will still not occupy storage, therefore, the collection will remain unchanged and the new files will be the only ones that remain storage capacity.

On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that from June 1, Google will notify in case the user approaches their free storage limit so that they hire more space or prefer to delete files.

Google also said that all those accounts that have been at least a couple of years without any type of movement or login will be eliminated, although it specified that it will notify those who could be affected by email, in order to take action corresponding.

What can I do in the new era of Google Photos?

If the user wants to download their images from the platform and free up space, they have to go to takeout.google.com, where they can download a backup copy of all the content saved in high or low quality, which will depend on the connection speed you have.

However, from the date mentioned, the use of the platform must be optimized if it is to be kept in the free version. Therefore, some tips for the new Google policy are to save the photos in High quality – the name that Google gives to compressed images -, delete the screenshots, delete duplicate photos or those that are expendable and empty the recycle bin constantly.

If you do not want to execute any of these steps, you have the ability to pay for a more extensive service. Google gives the option of increasing the capacity through Google One, which charges 100 GB for 34 pesos or 340 per year; 200 GB for 49 pesos per month or 490 per year; and 2 TB for 169 pesos per month or 1,699 per year.

Other options that can become an answer to this Google measure are Dropbox, which has a free 2 GB space, but offers 2 TB for $ 9.99 per month. One Drive grants a 100 GB option for 38.99 pesos per month.

Likewise, Apple users have their own cloud option, iCloud, which grants 5 GB free or 50 GB of storage for 17 pesos, while Amazon photos gives unlimited storage for those with a Prime membership.
