For the first time, a team of scientists has compared the advantages of traveling by bicycle in the city with respect to using the car using a strict economic point of view. The experts, from the Swedish University of Lund, have taken into account different parameters of Copenhagen, an eminently cyclist city: atmospheric pollution, effects on climate change, noise, routes used, wear of the pavement and the health of the inhabitants.
And after adding the individual and social costs involved in using both means of transport, the accounts are clear: each kilometer by car costs 0.50 euros, while the same journey by bike costs 0.08 euros. And if we only value the cost / benefit ratio for society as a whole, there is also a big difference: a kilometer by car costs 0.15 euros, while we all earn 0.16 euros for every kilometer driven on two wheels .
