What are the disappearing stairs to heaven in Hawaii?

There are 3,922 steps with a considerable inclination that separates the Earth from the Sky. The famous Haiku Stairs, known as the Hawaiian Stairs to Heaven, are one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Pacific Island.

Along the mountain path we find stairs that are located almost on a slope, winding through a 6,000 meter high mountain where the most intrepid tourists and mountaineers climb to take that desired photo of the island. The problem is that they are so dangerous that local authorities have chosen to close them so that serious incidents do not occur.

A place of dreams in Hawaii

Built by the United States Navy in 1940 with the idea of reaching the radio station that is located at the top, little by little the passage of time has diminished the structure of the stairs to the sky of Hawaii, turning them into a dreamy but dangerous attraction.

They were closed to the public already in 1987 where the accidents that had happened were already too many to keep this path open to anyone. Even so, tourists looking for strong emotions, adventure Youtubers or Instagramers, have not hesitated to go beyond the security measures to reach the top, with the authorities counting up to 4,000 tourists a year.

This illegal entry of tourists is accelerating the process of closing the stairs to heaven in Hawaii that has always faced the authorities for the use that is given to this natural construction in the middle of the mountains.

Those responsible allege that it represents a high expenditure of money for the citizens of the area, in addition to a responsibility in terms of security for its tourists. Councilman Brandon Elefante himself stated in an interview for Hawaii News Post: ” The city has already spent nearly a million taxpayer dollars to remodel the stairs and hundreds of thousands of dollars in security costs .”

Just one documented death

Despite the dangerous trail, the Hawaiian authorities are still breathing easy as they have not had to mourn fatal accidents. Only in 2021, the singer Fritz Hasenpusch, died ascending to the top of cardiac arrest.

The rest of the incidents have always been solved by the authorities. In addition, for years there has been an express prohibition for anyone who climbs the path with a fine of 850 euros . Sanction that has not been an impediment for many adventurers who take risks to achieve the objective of reaching the top of the mountain.

In the coming months, those responsible for the area will decide what to do with the stairs to the Hawaiian sky, although everything indicates that they will disappear forever.
