It consists of a refined erotic practice based on the bondage that Japan was born. It is said that it comes from the Edo period of that culture, when the samurai learned to immobilize the enemy through laborious roping. Today it is also practiced in the West , but unlike bondage , it does not necessarily require that the bundle remain completely immobilized.
The pleasure in this modality arises, more than from the binding technique, from the erotic relationship that is created between the dominant and the submissive subject. The sessions can last hours, and the visual approach is very important, as reflected in the photographs of sexual encounters with shibari, which seek the aesthetic quality of the ensemble formed by the protagonists involved and the rope.
