It is known as the " phenomenon of the full nest " to the fact that the children of more than 18 years remain in the home of their parents. As a group of researchers from the University of La Laguna has just confirmed, living with adult parents perpetuates family conflict.
In Spain, young people become independent much later than in other countries in the world, such as the United States. This fact creates in many families problems derived from the differences between young and old, between parents and children. As Beatriz Rodríguez, co-author of the study, explains to the SINC Scientific Information and News Service, "conflicts in adolescence reach their highest peak at the beginning, decrease during adolescence and increase again in later adolescence."
In this way, after passing the most critical period at the beginning of adolescence, if the independence of the children is prolonged, it can lead to various family conflicts . This has been certified by researchers from the University of La Laguna through a study carried out in the last four years based on the follow-up of 240 biparental families.
The study has also verified the differences between the types of conflicts and the strategies for solving them over time. While in the adolescent stage the conflicts come through studies, with more age they focus more on personal values and on future prospects. Likewise, as young people grow, they develop more constructive strategies to resolve conflicts, with greater negotiation.
