Skyscrapers are imposing buildings that predominate in large cities above the rest. In Spain, although it is not the most predominant type of building, we find high-volume skyscrapers in cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, and to a lesser extent in others such as Bilbao, Seville or Benidorm. But where is the tallest building in Spain? .
To answer this question we have to go to the capital of Spain and go to the business complex next to Paseo de la Castellana de las Cuatro Torres Business Area (CTBA) . This urban business park is home to the four tallest buildings in the country, including the Torre de Cristal, an imposing skyscraper that is currently the tallest in Spain.
Crystal tower
The Crystal Tower is currently the tallest building in Spain and one of the tallest in the European Union. Its construction began in 2004 and has 50 plants owned by the Mutua Madrileña company and is 249 meters high.
This building has a ground floor where you can access and 46 floors for offices. In addition, there are six other underground floors with a parking capacity of 1,250 cars. Its name refers to the more than 44,000 square meters of glass.
The building was designed by the architect César Pelli, with the collaboration of two other specialized architects, Íñigo Ortiz and Enrique León . It was completed in 2009 and is one of the tallest buildings that has an environmental category A certification since it has bioclimatic walls, a glass facade, and is capable of automatically adjusting the access of the sun. In addition, the building has an exhaustive control of energy consumption.
The Crystal Tower holds a record for being the building with the tallest vertical garden in Europe.
Other tall buildings in Spain
We don’t have to leave this business complex to find the other three tallest buildings in Spain. Next to the Crystal Tower, the Cepsa Tower is, by just one meter, the second tallest building in the country. Designed by the prestigious Norman Foster, it also opened in 2009.
These two skyscrapers are followed by their younger brothers located next to them: the PwC Tower, the only one designed by Spanish architects, Carlos Rubio and Enrique Álvarez-Sala Walter; and the Espacio Tower, inaugurated in 2007 with 56 floors and 224 meters high.
If we leave the capital we find other tall buildings in cities such as Benidorm -Intempo and the Hotel Bali-, Torre Sevilla in the Andalusian capital or Torre Iberdrola in Bilbao.
