Without a doubt, the trade routes for shark fins lead us on the map to a specific area of the globe: Hong Kong . This region of China, which until July 1, 1997 was a colony of the United Kingdom, accounts for more than half of all the shark fins that are imported to the entire planet (2012 figures). Japan would be next on the list.
In 2013 the figures changed a bit, as there was a 35% decrease in imports of this product to Hong Kong.
This business, moreover, happens to be the wildest and most ruthless because the fishermen take the shark out of the sea, cut off their fins live and throw it overboard again as if it were a sack to be discarded, condemning it not only to one certain death, but to an agonizing and heartless death.

Unfortunately this marketing of shark products has led to some shark populations declining by 99% in the last 50 years. The European Union banned the practice of finning without exception in 2012.
