This musical trend, originally called reggaeton , is the result of the fusion of Jamaican reggae with North American hip hop . It had a first outbreak in Panama in the 1970s and later became fully defined in Puerto Rico in the early 1990s .
The first appearance in Panamanian lands is linked to the black population of the country, descendants of Jamaicans and other Anglo-Antilleans who, in part, arrived at the time of the construction of the canal that crosses the isthmus of Panama. From the fusion came a very unique music that made its authors famous and quickly spread its rhythms throughout the Caribbean .
In Puerto Rico the composition is personalized, which gives this music the way it is known today. The Puerto Rican renaissance is usually associated with Vico C, a pioneer also in interpreting rap in Spanish , whose arrangements and nuances can already be considered reggaeton: his theme Bomba is cited to settle as the first finished example of the genre . However, some purists believe that Jamaican reggae did not sufficiently permeate the new formula, an influence that can be traced to later authors such as Daddy Yankee, Ivy Queen and Eddie Dee .
Its success has only increased since then: today, for example, it is the style most listened to by Spotify users in Spain .
