Many are the electrical appliances that we have in our home , but perhaps the most used of all is the refrigerator , without forgetting the freezer . Two elements that in most cases go together but have a significant difference that makes us think. The fact that when you open the refrigerator a light turns on, while if we do the same with the freezer part, nothing turns on. Why is there light in the fridge but not in the freezer?
Why is there light in the fridge but not in the freezer?
Think about it for a moment, why is there a light inside the fridge but when you open the freezer, instead, no? This question is something that perhaps we have all thought at some time and although it does not seem to have a really justified answer, the truth is that there is a reason that if we discover it, we can understand perfectly. An answer that was given by the economist Robert Frank to a former student of his when he posed the question to him. The answer is very interesting and, according to the economist, it is a fairly classic example of the cost-benefit principle.
So the main reason for not putting a light inside the freezer is that the cost outweighs the benefits while the opposite is true in the fridge. In other words, the cost in the refrigerator is outweighed by the benefits. The reason is obvious: Consumers use their fridge light almost all the time and it is therefore a valuable feature. Manufacturers, therefore, can justify the cost of installing those lights much more easily than with freezer lights.
In fact, the freezer is not opened as often as the refrigerator . In addition, unlike the refrigerator door , you usually do not stay for a few minutes to observe what to eat when you open the freezer, something that many people do when they open the refrigerator and do not know what to take but on the other hand it is not advisable if we have take into account the electrical cost of having the refrigerator open for a long time.
You also have to consider that it would not make sense to put light in the freezer , because the accumulation of ice would simply hide it very soon . Nowadays, however, there are freezers that have the “no frost” system that prevents the formation of layers and layers of ice, but it is most likely that when they arrived on the market it was already “tradition” that there was no light inside the freezer so it seems that it will continue to be such.
