Why isn't healthcare the industry leader in AI adoption?

Even today, with all the solutions that exist to help, solve, improve, increase, … put the reader the verbs you want, the health sector is by no means the most advanced in the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI ), despite all the benefits it generates. And whoever writes these lines does not say so, many reports and studies say so, although no one points out why health is not the first of them. I bring here a study that, although it does not answer exactly this question, what it does is corroborate that technology, services and banking companies are those that are taking advantage of the potential of AI the most. And he also cites that there is a long way to go in health sciences.

And this is said by Microsoft and the consulting firm EY, who took advantage of an event with companies a few days ago to release some pills from the report. But before going on to list these details, I also want to remember the words of the president of Microsoft Spain, who logically sweeps home so that Spanish companies look to their multinational and hire their developments and capabilities in artificial intelligence. Even so, he is right when Pilar López recounts that “ Spanish companies are twelve points below the European average in the effective deployment of AI-based solutions . It is therefore necessary to accelerate this process and move on to the phase of real use of the full potential of these technologies. The use of artificial intelligence to be more competitive, more agile and reach the market more quickly will be essential in the coming years to guarantee growth and companies are aware of this ”.

And going back to the Microsoft study, prepared by EY and which analyzes the level of adoption of artificial intelligence in 15 European countries, it clearly indicates that the companies that currently lead the way in terms of implementation maturity belong to the sectors of technology and telecommunications, services and banking and finance, where a greater number of projects can be observed deployed or that are beginning to take advantage of AI in an active way through the optimization of processes. This leadership position is directly related to the trend of these sectors to be digitally more advanced and have greater experience in taking advantage of data management, which favors the progression of projects beyond the pilot phase.

32% of European companies, says the same study, already have AI solutions in operation, and even in more traditional sectors such as infrastructure. 74% of companies have started their journey to take advantage of AI through pilot projects or basic solutions that have already been deployed, showing a continuous evolution towards a more advanced state. For its part, in the retail sector the distribution is very uneven, generating positions of clear advantage for the future. “25% of the organizations”, in this retail sector, “affirm that they currently have no plans on how and when to use AI, far above other sectors.”

Regardless of the data, and that I miss that health is a sector that is at the forefront of the implementation of artificial intelligence, the study does reveal that “in health sciences the use of internal data and external will accelerate the process of drug discovery, the prediction of diseases, the improvement of diagnostic techniques and an accelerated transition towards precision medicine ”, according to the text.

And an example of this, and we hope to tell and detail more in future articles, is what is being done at the Hospital de la Paz, which is using advanced technologies in artificial intelligence to improve and optimize the genetic analysis applied to the diagnosis of diseases. rare.
