Although meditation is often recommended as a discipline that can help us to be calmer, to relax, it seems that not all people are prepared to carry out sessions of this type of mental and physical practice. Meditating can cause us distress , according to a study.
Research from University College London indicates that, as meditation is gaining ground within the Western world, we better truly ask ourselves if it is with us.
We say this because, as we know, meditation is “sold” as a solution to the fast-paced lifestyle that we usually lead, as a moment in which we concentrate only on that interior that we tend to leave in the background, disconnecting and connecting with he.
According to this survey carried out by Marco Schlosser, a psychiatrist attached to the University College of London, and his team, 25 out of 100 people who have introduced meditation into their routine suffer, as a consequence, negative emotions, highlighting anxiety and fear .
Why can meditation cause us anguish?
In addition, it must be taken into account that it is a really important spectrum of consulted, more than a thousand people in total, all of whom had to meet some essential requirements, including having meditated at least once a week during the last two months.
These volunteers were asked about their emotional states during that period, as well as details about the meditation sessions themselves , the conditions in which they carried out this practice, and any other details that could explain more.
When analyzing the results obtained, Schlosser and his colleagues concluded that approximately a quarter of the participants had gone through “unpleasant experiences”, associated in most cases with disorders such as anxiety, fear, and other “psychological disturbances”.
It even seems that there are subjects susceptible to having a worse time during meditation, since the study showed that religious individuals and women were the most affected by this possibility .
And one last interesting detail indicates that there are forms of meditation that are more likely to lead to these negative emotions , such as the deconstructive type, including “zen” meditation, unlike the mindfulness or mindfulness varieties, which are less prone to these symptoms.
Do you meditate frequently? What are your feelings after doing it?
