First spring, now winter again. Polar sea air moves over Germany. Drop in temperature, snow and sleet are announced.
Update from February 11, 9.39 a.m .: Polar air flows to Germany. The spring-like temperatures have dropped significantly. Winter sets in after a stopover. There is snow in the low mountain ranges and in the Alps.
Winter weather is back in Germany
While the “Tanyalak” depression is raging in the Alps, a second storm is already approaching from the North Sea. In the Hamburg area, there may be a brief white surprise – in the form of slush – thanks to Deep “Sarai”. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns in its current warning report from Friday that the snow line can drop to 200 meters.
Sleet thunderstorms, snow showers and rain spread from the North Sea to the Main and later to the Ore Mountains. Caution, danger of slippery roads! However, sometimes the sun shines.
| Low mountain range snow line 500 to 300 meters | 1 to 5 cm of fresh snow |
|---|---|
| On the Alps above 800 to 1,000 meters | 1 to 5 cm of fresh snow, around 10 cm in higher traffic jams, up to 15 cm in the Allgäu |
A #cold front is currently moving across the southeast to the Alps. In East Thuringia and Saxony in particular, it is snowing down to low altitudes. Rain showers follow in the north-west, with snow showers preferred in the mountains./V pic.twitter.com/GApe9j2Mkk

The wind freshens up strongly. Stormy gusts (50 to 70 km/h) and isolated gusts of wind (up to 80 km/h) can be expected in a wide strip from the North Sea, western Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia across the central parts of the state to Saxony and Franconia.
Was that it with the winter of 2022?
However, the winter interlude is short-lived. “The last flakes will fall on the edge of the Alps and in the eastern low mountain ranges on Saturday night,” said the DWD weather experts.
High “Ingo” is gaining influence and is increasingly calming the weather. It’s still pretty cold in Germany until Sunday. But then it gets milder. Up to 14 degrees on the Upper Rhine are possible on Sunday. Between Rügen and the Bavarian Forest, however, the maximum values are only 4 degrees.
At the start of the next week, however, the signs are pointing to a storm again. In its current forecast, the DWD expected stormy gusts in the west and north-west. A foehn storm is announced in the Alps (see also the first report) .
After spring weather: hurricane for Valentine’s Day – DWD warns for large parts of Germany
First report from February 10, 2022
Munich – 15 degrees in February? The last few days have already given hope for the beginning of spring. Even the first flowers can already be seen in some places. Like last year, there is no sign of a winter wonderland for Valentine’s Day. Now the weather in Germany seems to be becoming more uncomfortable again. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns.
Storm warning in Germany: DWD and weather experts warn – “The situation is not harmless”
Instead of wintry, it can get stormy again in Germany from February 14th. “The situation in the coming week has a lot of potential for severe storms across Western and Central Europe,” says Dominik Jung at wetter.net. The jet stream is shifting to Central Europe and driving the western weather conditions. “The situation is not without danger, because heavy gusts of wind* appear again and again in the weather forecasts* for Germany,” explains the qualified meteorologist.
Wetter.net speaks of speeds of around 80 to 90 kilometers per hour. At the beginning of the week, the DWD warned of stormy gusts with wind force eight up to hurricane-force gusts with wind force 11, especially in the mountains and on the sea. Wind force 11 corresponds to a speed of 103 to 117 km/h*. In summary, the DWD says for Germany from Monday (February 14):
- West and north as well as in the middle: stormy gusts are unlikely (wind force 8)
- Northern center: local gusts of wind not excluded (wind force 9)
- Bergland: gusts of wind likely (wind force 9)
- On the mountain peaks: partly heavy gusts of wind (wind force 10) or gale force gusts from the southwest (wind force 11)
At the end of January, northern Germany had already suffered severe gusts of wind. The fire brigade declared a state of emergency for a large city due to the storm. Is the snow* coming back with the gusts of wind?

Temperatures in February: It’s getting warm in Germany – no more hope for snow?
“February 2022 could be one of the warmest February months since 1881,” weather expert Dominik Jung reported. As early as February 9th, the temperatures in Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate were at maximum values of up to 15 degrees. Despite the storm, it seems to be spring-like at the end of February. Both the DWD and wetter.net are reporting highs of around ten degrees for the next week. On Sunday (February 13) in the southwest again up to 13 degrees. February is around two to three degrees above the 30-year average across Germany, according to Jung.
A short cold front*, which previously moves across the north, could bring the last icy days. The temperatures drop below 10 degrees again until February 14th, the snow line drops and in addition to rain there can also be sleet and winter thunderstorms – a short winter interlude, because the trend points towards spring. “This February there will be no permanent snow cover in the lowlands below 500 m and certainly no permafrost,” says wetter.net. “Winter weather is not in sight”, is the gossip from weather expert Jung for all snow fans. There are also gloomy weather forecasts in Bavaria*. (chd) *Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
