World Red List of Birds 2014

The report, prepared by BirdLife-International, highlights the critical landscape in which the planet’s birds find themselves.
According to the data collected, of 10,425 cataloged bird species, 13% are in danger of extinction , 213 of them in the critical danger category.

In addition, they put 140 the number of known birds that they consider extinct . The situation is alarming, and the organizations are asking governments for urgent conservation plans.

What happens in Spain? The skies of our country are not in a good situation either, the data affirm that 26 species of Spanish birds have suffered a strong population decline , such as the Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus). This species, endemic to the Balearic Islands, is critically endangered.

Another acquaintance of the Spanish skies is the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) , which despite the tepid conservation success that has reinforced its presence in Europe, worldwide its population has decreased notably, reaching the category of near threatened.

From the organization they emphasize the importance of the involvement of the Communities in the matter, they demand programs and recovery plans that stop this decline.

Another important point that BirdLife-International highlights are the so-called “ biodiversity hotspots ”, such as the island of Java or areas of the Philippine archipelago . These places have aroused the interest of experts because, although it was already known that they were regions of great wildlife importance, this report has given them even more relevance if possible.

They are areas with many endemisms , but with few specimens of these, and also highly threatened by hunting, excessive urbanization or the illegal trade of animals. Birds such as the Sangihe pygmy martin (Ceyx sangirensis) or the Cebu brown vine (Phapitreron frontal), which populate these regions, have not been seen since recently.

From BirdLife they point out that it may be too late, that is why a forceful and urgent action is called for in these areas of the world.
