Insomniac is one of those development studios that doesn’t get much lavish on the media. Yes, it is true, they give interviews, maintain a podcast, a blog and are usually relatively “close” to users, but they do not give great headlines nor do they usually comment on the work of others, much less criticize. But this week they have occupied a preferential position in the current scene by signing an exclusive agreement with EA to launch a multiplatform title.
And now we echo the last episode of their podcast in which they have decided to show us a project that ended up being canceled and that they approached shortly after finishing the last adventure of ‘Spyro’. It was tentatively called ‘I: 5, Girl with a Stick’ and was intended to be a mix of ‘Tomb Raider’ and ‘Zelda’. A very ambitious mix that did not quite turn out well and ended up banished.
“After years of making sequels I think we were looking for something different , we were working on ‘Spyro’ for a long time and we thought, we have to look for something new.”
“Developing a new IP on a new platform was a great challenge.”
“It was kind of a ‘Tomb Raider’ meets ‘Zelda’. It was very different from ‘Ratchet’ and definitely a far cry from ‘Spyro’ which had castles and other fantastic things. This was something much more primitive.”
A priori it seems like a good material to start working on, but the project ended up being canceled when it was quite advanced. In fact, in the video we can see concept art and even scenes from the ingame game. So why was it canceled? The answer is also given by the guys from Insomniac. It wasn’t fun.
And that, my friends, means death.
