At 29 years old, Marc Márquez is already the fourth driver with the most victories of all time. In front of his 85 only appear the 90 of Ángel Nieto, the 115 of Valentino Rossi and the 122 of Giacomo Agostini. But despite the precocity that has marked his entire career, he needed three seasons to get the first one.
The fact that the man from Lleida made his debut in 2008 in 125cc with a KTM at low hours against the Aprilia/Derbi that dominated at the time had a lot to do with it. In 2010 he signed for the Ajo team and won a Derbi . And although the results were not long in coming, with two podiums in the first three races, the victory was still resisting.
Marc Marquez
It was not until the fourth stop, the Italian Grand Prix, when he got it. From that moment he took a run that lasted until that unfortunate crash in Jerez 2020. The victory in Mugello was followed by four more consecutive ones, to close the season as champion and with 10 first places in total. Marquez hadn’t dropped below five wins in any season since then until his injury two years ago.
That victory in Mugello came after a duel to the same finish line with Nico Terol (2nd), Pol Espargaró (3rd) and Bradley Smith (4th). 39 thousandths allowed him to get rid of an important slab and begin his legend.
Podium: 1st Marc Márquez, 2nd Nicolás Terol, 3rd Pol Espargaró
Márquez did not break any precocity record with that victory. He was then 17 years and 109 days old, far from the 15 years and 170 days that Scott Reding had in 2008 when he won at Donington Park – where the Spaniard made his first podium finish. However, when he became champion in Valencia at the age of 17 years and 263 days, he became the second youngest rider in history to do so after Loris Capirossi, who was 17 years and 165 days old when he did it in 1990.
Márquez needed 33 grand prix to climb to the top of the podium. Less work took him to get his first victory in Moto2. He did it in France in the fourth race of 2011 at the age of 18 years and 87 days, being the youngest to do it in the intermediate category. The same thing happened when he made the jump to MotoGP in 2013. In the second race in Austin at the age of 20 years and 63 days, he snatched the record that Freddie Spencer had held for more than three decades.
