23 endangered species are already extinct

Species that have been proposed for delisting include the ivory-billed woodpecker, Bachman’s warbler, Scioto’s madtom, St. Mark’s gambusia, eight species of southeastern freshwater mussels, eight birds, and a flower from Hawaii, and a bird and bat from Guam.

For these species, it is already too late.

After careful monitoring and consideration, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has recommended that 23 species be removed from the Endangered Species Act because they have confirmed that they have become extinct for complete . The proposal is based on exhaustive reviews for each species, and the US agency has determined that these listed species are already extinct, so they do not require a list under protection law.

The objective of the law is to protect and recover endangered species and their surrounding ecosystems. For these 23 species, most of them were already extinct, functionally extinct or in sharp decline at the time of being included in the protection list.

“The Endangered Species Act has prevented the extinction of 99% of the plants and animals under its care, but unfortunately these species were extinct or almost disappeared when they were included,” said Tierra Curry, of the Center for Biological Diversity, it’s a statement. “The tragedy will be magnified if we do not prevent this from happening again by fully funding fast-moving species protection and recovery efforts. The delay amounts to the death of vulnerable wildlife. “

Some of the extinct species:

Bachman’s warbler oo black-breasted bijirita

This small bird, previously found in the southern and southeastern parts of the country, was last seen in 1988. It was originally listed as endangered in 1967, after a dramatic population decline in the early and mid-1990s. 1900. The pretty yellow-bellied bird used to live in wooded, humid areas along the ground.

Flanged glasses

This 10-centimeter-long green and yellow bird was listed as endangered in 1984, but has not actually been seen since 1983 in Guam, the westernmost territory of the US. This species featured a species of glasses on eyes thanks to distinctive circles around their eyes.

Up to 11 species from Hawaii

Many of these species had striking features, such as the long, curved beaks of Kauai and nukupu’u akialoa, Kauai’s haunting call ‘o’o, and the bright colors of the Maui akepa and Molokai creeper. The endemic species of the islands face a greater risk of extinction due to their isolation and their small geographic distribution. Hawaii and the Pacific Islands are home to more than 650 species of plants and animals included in the protection list, where the majority of these species are not found anywhere else in the world.

Small fruit bat Mariana

Also known as the Mariana flying fox , the small fruit bat lived on Guam and fed on tropical fruits. It was last seen in 1968 and became extinct due to habitat loss from agriculture and military activity, predation by the brown tree snake, and overexploitation for use as food. It had a wingspan of two feet long and had a golden neck and yellowish-brown fur on the top of its head.
