Raser catches deaf people: defendant apologizes

The traffic light is green when a deaf woman tries to cross the street in Würzburg. Then she is hit by a powerful car and injured. The public prosecutor’s office makes serious accusations against the driver.

[Würzburg -] In an illegal car race, he is said to have hit a deaf woman with his car. A 22-year-old has now apologized to her in court.

“I’m very sorry, I’m sorry,” said the man in front of the Würzburg district court. He has been tried there since Friday. The allegation is, among other things, attempted murder.

Apart from the apology, the man did not comment on the act on Friday. At the age of 20, he is said to have delivered a car race with an opponent in a high-powered rental car on December 1, 2019 in Würzburg. His car caught the deaf pedestrian who crossed the street with her dog at a green light. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the man accepted the woman’s death.

The woman hit and the animal were slightly injured. On Friday, the 44-year-old, who cannot hear or speak, let a sign interpreter say that she accepted the apology. She doesn’t want the man to get a heavy sentence, it was certainly not on purpose.

In addition to attempted murder, the public prosecutor’s office also accuses the driver of dangerous bodily harm as a result of a prohibited motor vehicle race and of deliberately endangering road traffic. He was arrested a few days after the act, but the Bamberg Higher Regional Court overturned the warrant in mid-May 2020. The defendant has been at large since then.

In addition, a second speedster is said to have been involved. However, this has not yet been found.

A police officer said on Friday that the footage from a surveillance camera at a gas station near the scene of the accident had been evaluated. The rear of a silver car can be seen on it – on a single picture. Normally driving cars can be seen in six to eight pictures. One inferred from this that the car drove fast.

Nationwide, the judiciary has already grappled with the question of whether speeders can be potential murderers in their often souped-up and highly motorized cars and approve of the death of others. A decision by the Berlin Regional Court in February 2017, when two drivers were convicted of murderers, was groundbreaking. It was the first murder sentence against such car speeders in Germany. After a revision, a court decided that one of the men was no longer murdered, but rather attempted murder. According to the regional court, this judgment is not yet final and is currently pending at the Federal Court of Justice.

The trial in Würzburg was supposed to start in January, but had been postponed due to the corona. It will continue next Friday. Three more dates are planned until the end of September. [dpa]
