Because of the pandemic, the Oktoberfest has been canceled for the second time in a row. But the Munich celebrated anyway.
Munich – The Wirtshauswiesn in Munich came to an end after 16 days. A good one million visitors took part in the campaign, as Gregor Lemke, spokesman for the Association of Munich City Center Innkeepers, said on Sunday.
Because the Oktoberfest had to be canceled for the second year in a row due to the corona pandemic, 51 inns and beer gardens invited to the Wirtshauswiesn, where dirndls and lederhosen, music, Oktoberfest beer, gingerbread hearts and ox on skewers were supposed to provide Oktoberfest flair.
According to Lemke, 800,000 liters of beer were drunk and 600,000 pretzels were eaten. With the simultaneous, decentralized tapping of the beer kegs, 139 hits were counted at the start.
A strikingly large number of young people took part in the campaign, said Peter Inselkammer, spokesman for the Oktoberfest hosts’ association. Due to the positive response to the Wirtshauswiesn, according to the organizers, it should also take place next year – even if there should be an Oktoberfest again. A decision on this has not yet been made.
According to Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) and Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU), concepts are currently being developed as to how the Oktoberfest could take place in 2022. dpa
