The normality and life that we knew completely disappeared with the arrival of the coronavirus, which not only affected us in routines, but also emotionally and physically . For those of us who have children, it was even more so, since it affected the whole family and it is not only about taking care of ourselves, but also of them.
Making a comparison of the hours that mothers and fathers spent before and during the pandemic, it was found that the care of children continues to fall on them, who in this situation dedicated the equivalent of two full-time jobs to it .
The study
Published in the journal Politics & Gender , the study conducted in Canada during the months of April and June of this year, investigated how parenting and childcare schedules had been affected during the pandemic.
According to the results of the surveys carried out with more than 4,000 mothers and fathers who worked abroad and stayed at home, although both increased the number of hours dedicated to caring for their children, most of the time this responsibility continues to fall on mothers .
Before the pandemic, men reported spending an average of 33 hours a week caring for their children, increasing to 46 hours during the pandemic.
In the case of mothers, prior to the pandemic, they spent a weekly average of 46 hours, increasing to 95 hours when the coronavirus arrived, which in many cases was equivalent to almost two full-time working days .
It is important to mention that despite the fact that in many cases both parents had full-time jobs, childcare was not equitable and in most cases women carried greater responsibilities and more time dedicated to it.
The researchers note that these results show that there is still a disproportionately shared responsibility , with many women bearing a heavier burden when it comes to meeting the needs of their children even during the pandemic.
This research shows us why many mothers are being emotionally affected by the pandemic to a greater extent than fathers, so we must remember that the situation is difficult for everyone and now more than ever it is important to team up with our partner and maintain a relationship. good communication that helps us plan and organize schedules as a family, so that everyone has the opportunity to rest and the burden of responsibilities is more equitable.
