Trier mayor: "rampage is part of the history of our city"

A year after the fatal rampage in Trier, the city is still mourning. On the coming anniversary, relatives will commemorate the five fatalities in a service.

Trier – The rampage in Trier with five dead and many injured is still very present there even after a year. “It is part of the history of our city,” said Mayor Wolfram Leibe (SPD) of the German Press Agency.

On the anniversary next Wednesday (December 1st), Trier will commemorate the victims in an ecumenical service. “It’s going to be a day of mourning. But also a day when we can confidently say: Trier has managed to deal with this act, ”he said.

On December 1, 2020, a gunman raced through the pedestrian zone in a sports vehicle and hit people in a targeted manner. A 52-year-old has been standing before the Trier district court as a suspected perpetrator since August 19. The public prosecutor’s office accuses the German of fivefold murder and attempted murder in 18 other cases.

Remembrance day in Trier

Trier will pause on the day of remembrance. The service in the cathedral begins with a bell ringing at 1:46 p.m., exactly at the time of the crime. The mass is especially intended for the victims and their families. The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer (SPD), who is at home in Trier, has also agreed to attend.

For Petra Lieser, who lost her daughter Katja Lieser (25) in the rampage, it will be difficult. “This is one of many terrible days,” she says. Actually every day was “black” in the past year. But of course the anniversary will be particularly bad. She goes to the service “so that Katja is not forgotten”.

And then, for the first time in a year, she wanted to venture to the spot where her daughter was killed. So far, she has not made it back to the pedestrian zone because of her trauma. “I now only feel strong enough because I know my circle of friends around me,” says the director of a day-care center. dpa
