It happened in Benidorm to a baby of just eight days who suffered an episode of apnea. The mother observed that the girl was suffocating ; she had turned red and had trouble breathing.
Fortunately, the shock did not end in tragedy thanks to the quick action of the mother who practiced the necessary maneuvers to revive her and get her to breathe again. Immediately the ambulance and the police went to the scene and transferred the baby to the hospital where she remained in hospital for four days.
According to the mother, with whom we have contacted, the doctors have told her that she suffered an episode of apnea that she could not manage due to her immaturity. After doing several tests, any problem was ruled out and the girl is already at home recovering.
What to do if my baby is choking?
If the baby is choking, he will have a shaky cry, trouble breathing, and turn red or even purple. The first thing to do is ask someone to call 911 while we try to figure it out.
If he is still conscious, we should perform the Heimlich Maneuver in infants , placing the baby in a low position on the forearm with the head slightly lower than the rest of the body. Then, give five forceful blows to the baby’s back , between the shoulder blades, with the pad of the palm of the hand.
If despite the blows we see that the baby is not breathing (this is more common if he has choked on a solid object), we will do chest compressions . In both cases, an attempt is made to increase the baby’s intrathoracic pressure to produce an artificial cough and help him to move the object or whatever is obstructing the airway.
The baby is turned on his back holding the head at the nape of the neck and the five chest compressions are started with two fingers perpendicular to the chest. We return the baby to face down and repeat until the object or whatever is causing the suffocation is expelled.
Here you have a video of the Bizkaia Red Cross where they explain the technique, and although I hope you don’t have to do it, it is very important to know how to react in those moments when panic invades us and every second counts.
If this is not the case and the baby loses consciousness, we should begin the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers by placing him on a flat surface and beginning to inflate. In this other video they explain in detail how to do it in infants:
News like these remind us of the importance that we all know first aid and lung resuscitation techniques, from children to adults, but especially as parents, since we have children in our care and it never hurts to be prepared to know how to act in case of choking
