Flame inferno on the highway: Drunken truck driver races unchecked into cars

There was a serious accident in Fürth. A truck hit several cars. The resulting fire spread to a house. Several people were injured.

Fürth – On Tuesday evening (February 8th, 2022) a truck driver left the roadway with his semi-trailer truck weighing several tons in Fürth in Bavaria. The truck crashed into parked cars and rammed more than 30 vehicles. According to the police, a total of 31 cars were damaged and some went up in flames. The driver, who is said to have been drunk according to the officials, was arrested.

Hours later, it is unclear whether the 50-year-old had a specific motive or was unsound due to his alcohol level, according to a report by the German Press Agency (dpa). After the momentous chaos drive, the salvage work in Fürth will continue on Wednesday (February 9th, 2022). “I’ve never experienced such a devastation scenario,” said a spokesman for the Central Franconia police headquarters of the German Press Agency. “One can only imagine the force with which the truck drove there. It could have been a nightmare scenario if there had been more pedestrians around there.” Three people were slightly injured, including the driver himself.

Fürth: Residents had to be evacuated – truck drivers with breath alcohol of around two per thousand

The semitrailer “rammed, touched, pushed in front of the many cars and pushed them into a house,” said the spokesman. Several cars were on fire. The facade of a residential building also caught fire. Window panes shattered, shutters melted. Firefighters were finally able to extinguish the flames, but what was left was hopeless chaos. Local residents were evacuated from their homes and forced to stay in nearby shelters due to the low temperatures. An elderly woman was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

According to the police, the driver, who measured around two per thousand breath alcohol, drove his truck through an intersection when it was red and crashed into a car, the driver of which was slightly injured. Nevertheless, he drove on and probably accelerated. A passer-by was able to get to safety and escaped with minor injuries. The truck driver is now to be brought before an investigating judge. He may be in custody. Investigated for hit-and-run and assault. (Helena Gries with dpa)
