Because of the Ukraine war – the police union warns of attacks in Germany

The German police unions warn of attacks on federal territory due to the Russian war against Ukraine.

Osnabrück – The Ukraine conflict has long since arrived in Europe. The police union is now warning of attacks on facilities in Russia and Ukraine in Germany. The federal chairman of the police union (GdP), Oliver Malchow, told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung: “Violent conflicts between sympathizers of both groups in the Federal Republic are conceivable. This also includes attacks on representative offices and official institutions in both countries.”

In the event of an emergency, the federal and state police authorities would have to be ready at all times, and the effects of the conflict on internal security in this country would be reassessed every day.

Police union: “Germany can certainly become the target of terrorist attacks”

The competing police union DPoIG shares this assessment. Its chairman Rainer Wendt is assuming other possible goals. Wendt told the NOZ: “Germany can certainly become the target of terrorist attacks, for example by damaging or destroying critical infrastructure facilities.” In recent years there have been repeated attacks on the IT systems of various institutions or industries. Energy supply could also be a potential target.

With a view to the expected number of people who are expected to flee to Germany, Wendt also sees a danger in the accommodation of Ukrainian war refugees, whose accommodation would have to be extensively protected. Wendt said: “In Germany we learned with great pain that the Russian secret services do not shy away from practicing their murderous craft on German soil.”

Ukraine war: Federal states are preparing for refugees

Russia attacked Ukraine last Thursday (02/24/2022) and is taking military action against numerous cities in the country. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled west since then. The federal states and municipalities are preparing to accommodate numerous refugees.

According to Western governments, the Russian secret service had carried out several assassination attempts on Russian government opponents on foreign soil in recent years. Last year, a Russian was sentenced to life imprisonment in Berlin because he is said to have shot a Chechen-born Georgian in the Kleiner Tiergarten on behalf of the Russian state in 2019. (lz/AFP)
