COVID-19 vaccines do not cause hearing loss

Tens of millions of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, and there have been reports of all sorts of side effects including sudden hearing loss. Is it so? Do coronavirus vaccines cause hearing loss?

The answer

A team of scientists has analyzed a large database of vaccine side effects, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). They also looked at detailed case studies of nearly two dozen patients who sought treatment for hearing loss in the weeks after vaccination.

Their review of the data ” did not suggest an association between COVID-19 vaccination and a higher incidence of hearing loss compared to the expected incidence in the general population,” the authors explain in their research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association .

Those who received the vaccine did not have higher-than-normal rates of hearing loss. To get data on hearing loss in vaccinated people, they turned to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which is a database where anyone can contribute information about what they think is a side effect. To close the fence, they only included cases that had been confirmed by clinical tests or diagnosed by a doctor. The conclusion was that for every 100,000 people who received the vaccine, the rate of hearing loss in recently vaccinated people was between 0.6 and 28 cases per year . This means, according to the experts, that they probably would have had the same problem whether they were vaccinated or not.

Regardless, scientists are still waiting for new data to directly compare these symptoms in people who got the vaccine with people who didn’t get the vaccine, but this large study makes it clear that there is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines cause health problems. hearing.
