The legendary and original Ferrari logo first appeared at Spa-Francorchamps on July 9, 1932 and, to celebrate the anniversary, the stickers on the cars of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have been replaced by the same logo for the rest. of the weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
Although the iconic Ferrari logo hasn’t changed much over the years, there are subtle differences between the original version and the current one.
The original horse was less stylized, and the letters S and F, representing Scuderia Ferrari , were smaller and much further apart.
The Prancing Horse originally represented the emblem of Italian World War I aviator and hero Francesco Baracca , whose family told Enzo Ferrari to use it for good luck in his racing cars.
Recalling how the idea of creating this logo came about, Ferrari once explained that it was during a chance meeting with Baracca’s parents.
“When I won my first race at the Savio Circuit in Ravenna in 1923, I met Count Enrico Baracca and Countess Paolina, parents of the aviator hero,” he wrote.
“One day the countess told me: ‘Ferrari, why don’t you put my son’s Prancing Horse on your cars? It will give you good luck’. The horse was and always will be black; I added the canary yellow background, the color of the city of Modena”.
In addition to Modena yellow, which is close to Ferrari’s base in Maranello , the Prancing Horse logo also contains the colors of the Italian flag on its top.
This logo first appeared on the Scuderia Ferrari car that took part in the 1932 24 Hours of Spa.
It was also painted on Ferrari entered Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 MMs. The team achieved a double thanks to Antonio Brivio and Eugenio Siena, as well as Piero Taruffi and Guido d’Ippolito.
The Prancing Horse logos on the Ferrari 488 GTE cars competing this weekend in the World Endurance Championship will also be replaced by the original version as part of the tribute.
