Lando Norris dazzled everyone in qualifying at the 2022 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix by making it to the final round and posting the fifth fastest time of Q3, behind only the two Ferrari and Red Bull cars.
Further highlighting his performance on Saturday, Daniel Ricciardo was unable to get past fourteenth position in Q2 on the streets of Monte Carlo, with a best time that was more than a second slower than his teammate’s.
Bearing that in mind and being aware that overtaking on the track in Monaco is a very difficult task, everything seemed to indicate that McLaren would manage to finish first of the rest this weekend, but the weather added the uncertainty that the race needed and Norris was harmed by the strategy that decided to carry out its pit wall.
When it came time to switch from wet or intermediate tires to dry compounds, a decision in the pits left fifth position on a plate for the Mercedes driver, who overtook a Lando Norris on track who was unimpressed by the maneuver. overtaking.
When asked by Motorsport.com in reference to the words of Russell, who had said he made a “super pass” to finish first of the pack, Norris strongly disagreed with his compatriot.
“Super? If that was super overtaking, then he’s been doing shitty overtaking so far.”
“I had just pitted for dry tires and obviously he stopped a lap early, his compounds were hotter, mine were colder. And it happened to me, it’s pretty simple.”
“I wasn’t impressed at all. I was more frustrated at the time,” said the young Briton, referring to McLaren ‘s strategy.
More specifically about the timing of the pit stops, Norris explained that he would have a talk with his team to prevent these moments from being repeated, as they are not in a position to afford to lose points for decisions that could be more accurate.
“There are things that we will talk about, about the strategy, I don’t think we have done a good job. And of course there are always things to improve on. It is something that I want to talk about behind the scenes. But yes, there are things to improve in that aspect”, he concluded.
