Starting from seventh position, Fernando Alonso’s main objective was to score points again after the great comeback in Barcelona that saw him return to the top 10, something he had not achieved since the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix.
Despite the several red flags, one caused by the weather and another due to a serious accident by Mick Schumacher, and everything that happened during the race, the Asturian driver skillfully drove to maintain seventh place, a position in which he finally crossed the checkered flag.
After the last restart of the Monaco Grand Prix, Alonso was frightening at times, as his pace suddenly dropped by more than one and two seconds per lap compared to Lando Norris, who was in sixth position, just ahead of the.
Already in the last minutes of the session, the Spanish rider from Alpine tightened the pace and momentarily set the fastest lap, although it lasted relatively little since, among other things, Norris , who had opened a window of more than 30 seconds, he was able to pit and mount new medium tyres.
As soon as he got out of the car, Alonso explained what happened in those last laps of the Monaco GP :
“In the last part of the race we knew that it was a bit optimistic to do 33 laps with the mediums, so I saved a lot of tires and when they told me that Esteban Ocon had a five-second penalty, I started to open the gap a bit, but Hamilton already I didn’t have tires or I didn’t have the motivation, I was a bit angry.
Analyzing the race further, the Alpine driver acknowledged that they could have made better use of everything that happened during the race, but that he was still content with seventh position, which to date is his best result of the season.
“At the beginning it was not even possible to start because of the level of grip and visibility, and then we went through the extreme, intermediate and dry tyres. It was a race in which it was very easy to make a mistake, we have been constantly focused and we have achieved good points.”
“We could just as well have been sixth, because I think I entered a lap too late to put on the dry tyres,” concluded the man from Oviedo.
