After his successes in other categories, Michael Andretti , legendary Indycar driver and former Formula 1 driver for McLaren, decided that he would make the leap to the premier category of motorsport with his own team starting in the 2024 season.
Andretti has started work for this income in just two seasons and has submitted all the necessary applications and that have been required, despite not having received formal approval from the board.
It should also be remembered that not everyone is happy with this arrival of the American team, since the 200 million dollars that it would pay to enter does not convince all those already present on the grid.
This involvement in the category would come from Renault, with whom Andretti has decided to work, and, if approved, they will be the newest team on the grid since 2016, the debut season for Haas, the other US team. USA, and the number of single-seaters would be expanded to 22.
Fernando Alonso knows the Andretti team very well, since it was its structure that gave him a seat to compete in the 2017 Indy 500, in a race in which he fought for victory until an engine failure prevented him from closing with successful debut in the famous American event.
The pilot himself was in charge of describing the two weeks he spent preparing and carrying out the test as the best of that season.
Referring to the possibility of Andretti forming an F1 team, the Alpine driver said: “Of course it would be fantastic if that happened.”
“I know Michael very well, I know the Andretti family. It is obvious that they are an important part of motorsport in general. For me, they are legends,” explained the man from Oviedo.
“If we can bring them into Formula 1 I think it will be great for both parties. Formula 1 will benefit from that and I think Michael and his team will also benefit from being in F1.”
“They have the talent and the resources to be here. They have the ability to be in Formula 1 and be competitive,” Alonso reasoned.
“So I hope that, in the next few years, that goal becomes a reality. I will keep a close eye on it.”
