The Spanish Ferrari driver arrived at the legendary Imola track with the best news he could receive, and that is that the Italian team announced the renewal until the end of the 2024 season. In this way, Carlos Sainz assured his future after the rumors They said that they would only reach an agreement for one year.
The Madrilenian himself explained that the whole situation caused him some laughter, since the contract had already been signed and the only thing missing was the arrival of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, one of the Prancing Horse houses, for it to become official.
Sainz was hoping for a strong result for this test, starting with qualifying after a promising start in Friday’s only free practice, but an accident in Q2 meant he had to start from tenth in the sprint race.
The Ferrari man lost control of the F1-75 before entering the main straight, and explained what happened: “A shame, really, because I was going fast throughout the session, even in free practice in the water I felt comfortable. A somewhat strange mistake, honestly, I don’t quite understand it because I wasn’t going to the limit with the car, nor was I going to the maximum”.
“I knew that the rain was going to come and that I had to do a good lap before the water came, but I also knew that I had a margin and that I didn’t need the last tenths,” he told DAZN F1 just after getting out of the car. . “A shame, I have no choice but to apologize and try to recover.”
The Spaniard knows that he will have to give his best in order to minimize the damage and remain a clear candidate for the world title, as Charles Leclerc has escaped in the standings thanks to his two victories and three podiums in the first rounds of the 2022 season.
“At least there is still the whole sprint race and the recovery race. That is the goal, to come back as much as possible tomorrow and make sure we have the opportunity to go forward,” said Sainz.
