Fernando Alonso ended the last Australian Grand Prix with a bittersweet taste due to his accident in qualifying when he was fighting for pole position and the poor strategy in the race that left him stuck in the last positions.
The Asturian, after a period of two weeks, landed at the next appointment, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where he achieved one of his most remembered victories, holding Michael Schumacher’s car for several laps when the German was much faster.
At the FIA press conference prior to the first free practice sessions, the two-time world champion recalled the good times he had on the Italian track: “I have great memories at Imola, even though when I got here it wasn’t in a racing car. Ferrari and it was the enemy in those races, but it’s still a fantastic place for the sport.”
“A lot of things have happened in this circuit, I didn’t have a good race last year, that’s my closest memory, so I hope I can change it and have a good weekend”, explained the man from Oviedo.

The Alpine driver finished in tenth position in the last edition, although he went off the track before starting the race and then spun on the wet track. In 2022, Fernando Alonso wants to improve his performance at Imola, and he is confident: “I think it will be an interesting Grand Prix, obviously because of the rain, we were very fast in Australia and competitive in Saudi Arabia”.
“The car is really fast and I feel good about it, but with the sprint format we only have one practice session to set up the car and to make some decisions, then you go into qualifying where you can’t touch any more adjustments,” he said.
“That it’s raining gives everyone one more chance, so we must be sure in our decisions, and we hope to have a calm weekend,” continued the Spaniard, who has received the new A522 fund.
“It’s obviously an update to the ground, and hopefully we’ll have more performance, with this it will be possible to test it in the first free practices, so we’ll go a little blind on the data, but on Sunday at noon we’ll see if it’s a jump. or not. We hope it’s something good and that in Miami we have it in both cars,” Fernando Alonso said.
