Sergio Pérez has shown himself at a high level in the streets of Monte Carlo, finishing ahead of his teammate and reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, in Friday practice and leading the last test session this Saturday before the qualifying session .
This put the driver from Guadalajara as a strong candidate for pole position, but his hopes ended in the worst way when he crashed at the Portier corner in the final moments of Q3 while trying to improve on the great time set by Charles Leclerc.
Finally, the first position on the grid remained in the hands of the Ferrari driver, and Pérez had to settle for third place, ahead of Verstappen , who was improving his time before his teammate’s accident.
The director of the Red Bull team, Christian Horner , considered that what Leclerc did at the end of the classification was unattainable, and although he regretted the incident of the Mexican, he praised the high level he is having throughout the weekend in Monaco.
“I don’t think we were for pole today. Charles [Leclerc] has been sensational, I congratulate him because we couldn’t have done that time,” said the Milton Keynes team’s chief executive in his analysis of the classification on Sky Sports .
“It’s a shame because I think both drivers could have improved a bit. Max [Verstappen] was dropping his time, but it’s one of those things that happens. ‘Checo’ has been very solid all weekend,” he said.
“Anyway, it’s third and fourth, maybe tomorrow there will be some rain. Yes, it’s disappointing not to be on pole or front row, but we’ll fight from there,” said the Briton.
Asked if he thought Sunday would be a day that Ferrari would dominate, Horner insisted nothing had been decided yet: “We won’t give anything to anyone. We’ll fight as hard as we can.”
“There’s the weather, there’s the safety cars, a lot of things can happen and we’ll see what happens. We’re on the second row but it’s good to be disappointed with that,” the Red Bull boss concluded before getting to work on the race. Sunday.
