The three days of free practice for the French GP had shown how even Ferrafri and Red Bull were, so the Cavallino turned to Sainz to slipstream a Charles Leclerc who in the first attempt, with that help, barely surpassed eight thousandths to Max Verstappen.
In the second, again with a masterfully executed slipstream from Sainz, the Ferrari Monegasque lowered his mark further, by three tenths, to take his seventh pole position of the year while Verstappen barely improved to finish 0.304s behind.
The engine change penalty that sends Carlos Sainz to the back of the grid for the race in France hurt more when seeing the performance of the Spaniard in qualifying. After getting through Q1 without any problems, he led Q2 with confidence, and in Q3, with no pole options due to the penalty, he started twice on used tires to help his teammate to pole position.
Kevin Magnussen, also penalized, reached Q3 but did not start, so Sainz will start penultimate and the Dane last.
Behind the two favorites for the title was Sergio Pérez, who took advantage of Sainz’s absence to be third, ahead of Lewis Hamilton who will accompany him in the second row.
Lando Norris managed, as the only McLaren in Q3, to squeeze in between the Mercedes by beating Russell , while Alonso, also as the only representative of Alpine in the final round (Ocon fell in Q2) finished eighth, and will share the fourth row of the grid with Yuki Tsunoda.
The track limits were ultimately not decisive, although they did cause Mick Schumacher to be eliminated in Q1 for overtaking them at turn 3, where he cuts through the inside (unlike most corners). We’ll see in the race…

This was the Q1 of the classification of the French GP 2022 of F1
There was a certain calm at the start of the first qualifying round, and Pierre Gasly took advantage of it to be first for a few moments. However, when Leclerc came out he achieved the best time of the weekend on his first attempt, stopping the clock in an amazing 1:31.727 that left six tenths ahead of Pérez.
When Verstappen came out, he set a record in the second sector, but between the first and third he lost 0.164s to Leclerc. Shortly after, the Dutchman complained that the Mexican had gotten into his line, and Hamilton also found himself in traffic, which sent him to seventh position, behind Alonso (5th) and Bottas (6th).
There were less than six minutes remaining when Sainz completed his first lap, while the other penalized driver, Kevin Magnussen, was still in the pits. The man from Madrid was placed third, with no other goal than to beat the Dane.
At that time, in addition to the Dane from Haas, Guanyu Zhou, Mick Schumacher, Nicholas Latifi and a Sebastian Vettel who occupied the last position were virtually eliminated. There was still one try left, and almost everyone went out looking for a better lap. Traffic made things difficult, but Vettel posted his best time of the weekend to make the cut. Under braking at Turn 8, Alex Albon spun into the danger zone. In fact, he was eliminated before the advance of some of his rivals until Mick Schumacher had his time erased for exceeding the track limits and the young German fell to 19th position. In addition to Mick, Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, Guanyu Zhou and Nicholas Latifi fell surprisingly in Q1.

While in Haa they spoke with the FIA asking for explanations for the elimination of their driver Mick Schumacher , Alex Albon wanted to get out on the track quickly at the beginning of FP2, like a Lewis Hamilton who was the first driver to set a time.
Leclerc was placed first for a few moments until Pérez, with new tires, put almost half a second on him. Almost instantly, Verstappen lowered the Mexican mark by 0.130, to take the lead.
Carlos Sainz made his best lap of the weekend, a 1:31.081 that put Verstappen by nine tenths and more than a second to the rest. With that, the man from Madrid returned to the box, ending his participation in this round of qualifying.
Vettel, Russell, Ocon, Albon and Tsunoda were in the elimination zone with two minutes to go when the second attempts began, involving everyone except Sainz and Verstappen.
Most improved, but Daniel Ricciardo, Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas, Vettel and Albon did not improve enough to make the cut, and were eliminated in the second round.
