The last record that Rossi broke in Assen

Valentino Rossi was still seven grand prix wins away from equaling his compatriot Giacomo Agostini’s record, but in 2017, at the Dutch track of Assen, he broke another record that was not without merit: the oldest winner in the category of MotoGP, held by Troy Bayliss since 2006.

Valentino Rossi had achieved his 114th and last victory in the premier class a season earlier, at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, at the age of 37 years, 3 months and 18 days, while the Australian scored his first and only victory in MotoGP with 37 years, 6 months and 25 days. The one from Tavullia beat Bayliss after winning his 115th Grand Prix at the age of 38 years, 4 months, and 9 days on a day like today.

Everyone remembers Bayliss’s spectacular victory when, shortly after winning his last WorldSBK title, he rode as a substitute for the injured Sete Gibernau at the 2006 Valencia Grand Prix, riding the mighty Ducati Desmosedici and beating the most successful of the WorldSBK MotoGP.

The record refers only and exclusively to the new MotoGP category, because the longevity records of some 500cc riders were then years away from being broken by the rider from Tavullia, with the first three being well over forty.
