Two weeks after the serious mistake he made on the penultimate lap of the Catalan Grand Prix, Aleix Espargaró must continue to answer questions about it, but far from being an issue that seems to affect him, the Aprilia rider had no problem giving details of his feelings and feelings during the hours and days following what happened.
If on Thursday before the German Grand Prix he recognized that on Sunday in Barcelona he could not sleep, and that he had to go on vacation with his family to forget what happened, this Friday he gave explanations again when they asked him if he would be with his children It had been key to recovery.
“Going to Disneyland went very well for me, but I actually spend a lot of time with them. I needed to get out of my routine, and my routine freaks me out. I don’t do anything; I don’t go to parties, I don’t go out with friends, I just go out on bike and I spend the afternoons at home with my children. But after Barcelona I had the feeling that I had to do something different”, he explained.
For Aleix this year everything is being ‘new’, never in his long career had he been fighting for the championship.
“The reactions I had after the mistake in Barcelona were strange; I had never experienced them before. I couldn’t sleep on Tuesday or Wednesday, I was pissed off while eating with my wife. I don’t even know why I felt that way, because my season is fantastic and everything is going well for me in life,” he acknowledged.
The one from Granollers also admitted that, for the first time, he feels strong pressure.
“The pressure I’m under this year I’ve never felt before. Fabio (Quartararo) is 23 years old, so he has time to win ten titles. I won’t be able to win championships at 40 years old, so I’m very focused on trying to take advantage of this opportunity. Maybe that was the reason for my reaction”, he tried to understand.
Espargaró ruled out making changes in the way he receives information on the number of laps remaining in the race.
“The Barcelona thing was my fault, and it won’t happen again. I don’t think it’s necessary to add the lap counter to the dashboard, because that’s where the important information has to go. It hadn’t happened to me in 15 years, and I hope that it doesn’t happen to me again,” he settled that issue.
Finally, they asked the Spanish rider to analyze the market in terms of Aprilia, since there are two free slots in the new satellite line-up of Noale ‘s house for 2023, for which several riders, most of them Spanish, sound.
“Aprilia would have no problem if the four drivers were Spanish. One of the ones that Massimo Rivola likes the most is Spanish and young; he is the one he likes the most. To me, Raúl Fernández seems like a good driver. What he did last year is very strong”, in reference to the Moto2 runner-up in his rookie year.
