The Devil, who the week before, in Mugello –concluded the second–, already left more than one speechless with a very creditable second place in a scenario in which, on paper, the Ducati should dominate, went a step further at the Circuit, to certify his second victory of the course.
On a day marked by heat –55º on the asphalt at the start of the test–, the management of the tires and the smoothness of the Frenchman’s driving were decisive.
Neither the speed of the Ducati, nor the drive of Aleix Espargaró, the author of the pole position, could tie the Yamaha rider short, who escaped from the precise moment the traffic lights went out.
With the current champion escaping, and more than five seconds ahead of his pursuers, the focus was on the brawl for second position between Espargaró, Jorge Martín and Johann Zarco, and who theatrically fell on the Pramac team’s side from Madrid.
Zarco completed a podium from which Joan Mir was left out, who climbed 13 positions to finish fourth. After starring in an exemplary race, Aleix finished fifth. The Aprilia rider began to celebrate second position as he passed the finish line on the penultimate lap, and when he realized his mistake and reacted, he rejoined the track in sixth. Despite this, the man from Granollers (Barcelona) managed to beat Luca Marini (sixth).
Seventh place went to Maverick Viñales, while Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
Alex Márquez interpreted a brutal climb since he started last and crossed the finish line in tenth, after overtaking Pol Espargaró, who faded away and closed the time table.
Alex Rins and Pecco Bagnaia, for their part, could not even finish the first lap when they were run over by Takaaki Nakagami in the first corner. The Japanese, who in the action hit his head with the back of the Bagnaia Desmosedici, was taken to the medical center, where tests are being carried out to determine possible consequences.
