MotoGP riders, according to current regulations, can use 12 rear tires each weekend of competition, with a maximum of six soft, four medium and three hard. However, through an official statement, the Grand Prix Commission announced the decision that, from 2023, the number of compounds available each weekend will be reduced by two.
In this way, only one softer and one harder tire option will be available, eliminating the intermediate step that teams have had until now, and the actual specific characteristic of the rubber will be determined before each race.
This means that the drivers will be able to use the same amount of tires that they currently use (12 per event), but there will be a more limited range of options, in order to reduce the amount of tires that Michelin produces and transports and that ultimately are not they use.
“A survey was conducted among all MotoGP teams to determine future tire allocations, and was overwhelmingly in favor of the idea that from 2023, there will only be two rear specs (slicks) at each event,” the official statement read. of the championship.
As it is, all the drivers will have the same assignment every weekend: seven of the softest option and five of the hardest, no matter which ones have been chosen. Michelin , in this situation, will decide which specifications are taken to each event: soft and medium, medium and hard, or soft and hard.
Consequently, the Grand Prix Commission has confirmed that, from the 2023 season, the allocation of rear slick tires per MotoGP rider per event will be one of the following combinations: seven soft and five medium, or seven medium and five hard. , or seven soft and five hard.
