One of the images from the start of the Italian MotoGP Grand Prix was the rear wing mounted, for a few minutes during FP1, on the Aprilia RS-GP of the test rider and guest this weekend, Lorenzo Savadori. The piece is very reminiscent of the rear spoiler of a sports car, although of a much smaller size, logically.
The piece passed the FIM homologation this Thursday and, on paper, it does not affect, by regulation, the aerodynamic ‘update’ to which the pilots are entitled during the season.
Put in contact with Aprilia, the team explained that “at the moment we are analyzing the data collected during FP1, and if we consider it interesting we will test it in FP2 with Aleix Espargaró and Maverick Viñales”, which would confirm that this new spoiler is not going in the homologated aerodynamic package.
Aprilia’s chief engineer, Romano Albesiano , explained on Italian television the purpose of the part.
“The idea is to help create some load, especially in the braking phase, to try to reduce the jump of the rear wheel, making the bike more anchored to the ground and thus favoring corner entry. But we are still at principle and we have to understand well also how to intervene in terms of configuration, ”he explained to Sky .
With this advance, Aprilia takes the initiative with respect to Ducati in a field in which the Borgo Panigale house has always been a pioneer, with pieces as curious as the ‘spoon’ on the keel of the motorcycle and many other aerodynamic elements and pieces in his Desmosedici.
