Le Mans.- Enea Bastianini managed, in the last moments of the FP2 of the French Grand Prix, to close a lap in 1.31.148, surpassing the best lap ever given in this circuit, which was in possession, until today, of the Frenchman Johann Zarco , which in 2018 set the mark at 1.31.185. Just after closing that meteoric lap, Gresini’s Italian suffered a harmless crash at the legendary Le Mans chicane, located at Turns 3-4.
Behind the Ducati rider, Aleix Espargaró achieved the second fastest time, beating Alex Rins and Zarco himself, who was fourth after starring in one of the images of the day, arriving at the end of the straight and crossing at full speed. He speeded the gravel run-off and a part of the track, fortunately without meeting any other rider on his way or suffering a crash.
Pecco Bagnaia was sixth, ahead of Fabio Quartararo, Brad Binder, Joan Mir, Jorge Martín and Jack Miller, who closed the top 10 of FP2, in which the first nine managed to qualify provisionally for Q2 on Saturday, being the tenth position for Pol Espargaró thanks to his best time in FP1, since in the afternoon the Honda rider could only finish 13th. Marc Márquez finished one position further back, with Alex Márquez 18th and Takaaki Nakagami (22nd) completing Honda’s disaster in this afternoon session at Le Mans.
Training was riddled with injuries, first Joan Mir lost his front end at 200 km/h in turn 7. Miller kissed the tarmac in turn 11, Darryn Binder in turn 7, the same as Marco Bezzecchi. Luca Marini crashed at the chicane at Turns 3-4, while Franco Morbidelli crashed at Turn 10 and Alex Márquez at Turn 7, all without physical consequences.
