Portimao was not the result expected by the Honda team last Sunday, in which Marc Márquez, the best-placed rider of the winged brand at the finish line, could only finish sixth, more than 16 seconds behind the winner, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo. .
Márquez managed at the last minute to overtake his brother Alex Márquez, who was seventh, with Pol Espargaró losing eighth place in the last corner to cross the finish line in ninth, all of them within those ‘painful’ 16 seconds of El Diablo’s Yamaha. The fourth Honda, Takaaki Nakagami’s, ended up on the ground.
Without time for too much reflection, Repsol Honda faces the sixth stop on the MotoGP calendar looking for the first podium for Marc, who missed the rounds in Indonesia and Argentina due to injury.
“I am happy to arrive in Jerez and see the Spanish fans,” explains Márquez before visiting a circuit where he was injured in July 2020, the beginning of the particular ordeal that the Spanish rider has been going through since then.
“It is a very special circuit to race, not only because of its history, but also because of the atmosphere on race day; after some difficult years, I hope that all the fans can come and enjoy it,” he says.
Since his fateful crash in 2020, Márquez has only raced once in Jerez, at the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix, the second in which he was taking part in his comeback after almost a year injured in his right arm, a race in which 9th at the finish line, more than 10 seconds behind the winner, Jack Miller.
“For us it will be an important weekend to continue improving and get closer to the lead,” says Márquez who, after the race in Portugal, highlighted the performance of the 2022 Honda.
“Portimao was a complicated Grand Prix, so I hope that in Jerez everything will be easier and we can work well during the weekend to fight on Sunday”, settles the one from Cervera.
