The 2020 world champion managed to qualify among the top ten, provisionally securing a place in Q2 this Saturday, the main objective of the brand’s drivers to try to avoid the great handicap that going beyond the third row of the grid, a problem that has been penalizing them since the start of the season.
“The day went well, I felt good on the bike, but I struggle a bit, I’m not comfortable, I have quite a few scares and I don’t ride as I want”, admitted Mir at the end of the day.
“I think we can do well, the bike works here, the potential is high and we can improve a little in terms of braking, now the bike moves a lot, I’m not comfortable at all and we have to improve that”, de facing Saturday.
In a circuit that has everything, the Suzuki seems to confirm the step forward compared to last year, but Mir does not believe that the weak points have been improved apart from power.
“It is not that we have taken a step forward in the strengths we had, we have simply improved the top speed, which was the most negative thing. We have advanced in other details, because when there is more power, other problems arise that have to be solved”, he explained.
“Race by race I am feeling better, we are understanding the potential of the bike and the important thing is to arrive in Europe knowing what works and what doesn’t”.
In addition to qualifying with the eighth fastest lap, the race pace was the most remarkable thing, both for Alex Rins and for Mir himself, although in general all the drivers have taken a step forward in Austin in terms of pace and speed, surely associated to the improvement of asphalt and potholes.
“I’m not particularly surprised, it went very fast but the track is better (than last year), we all go very fast and in MotoGP every day you can make fewer mistakes, you have to start at full speed from the beginning. Tomorrow we will go even faster fast and all the information we have today about the good weather we’ve had, will allow us to go down to 2.02, I think we have room for improvement”, settled the man from Palma.
