Meerkats are a species of small mammal that is also known as "rock cat". A member of the mongoose family, these friendly animals have a long and slender body with an average weight of about 700 grams. Their fur, not very abundant, is mottled gray, cinnamon or brown with a silver tint.
Its habitat is the desert; specifically they inhabit the regions of the Kalahari Desert and the Namib Desert (Africa) . They are diurnal and social animals (they live in large communities of up to 40 members) and feed mainly on insects, spiders, centipedes and some plant components.
Predators
Their greatest enemies are hawks, eagles, and jackals. Usually found in the savannah and open plains, these specimens are easy prey for these predators.
Due to their affable and friendly demeanor, meerkats are often domesticated and treated as pets, especially in their area of origin (although they can transmit rabies). However, in many countries the possession of a meerkat is punishable by law.
It is not an animal that is in danger of extinction.
