The citizens of the Netherlands, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden and Belgium are the ones who use this means of transport the most on a daily basis in the Old Continent. The advantages of moving by bicycle are abundant, both for the health and pocket of those who pedal as well as for the environment and the quality of life in cities.
But in addition, the universe of the two wheels and the pedals has a remarkable weight in the monetary aspect. According to the European Federation of Cyclists, the bike contributes 200,000 million euros per year to the continental economy (a figure higher than the GDP of Denmark). To make this evaluation, its beneficial effects on health, fuel savings and lower carbon dioxide emissions into the air were taken into account.
Specifically, the greatest benefits would come from savings in health (121,000 million), the tourism industry (44,000 million), improved traffic on the roads (24,000 million) and the bicycle industry itself (18,000 million euros) .
