It is a disease that affects both men and women, caused by a malfunction of the apocrine glands, located in the armpits, chest and genitals.
Its clearest manifestation is strong body odor, difficult to hide . When the secretion of the apocrine glands gives rise to the formation of sweat and this comes into contact with the bacteria of the skin, the decomposition generates fatty acid and ammonia, responsible for the stench. According to experts, it can pose a problem with self-esteem and the ability to relate to others.
Regarding the origin, it is believed that it may be genetic , although it could also be a consequence of some other diseases, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders or problems in the adrenal gland. It usually appears at 15 years of age and never disappears, except in some women, in whom it decreases after the arrival of menopause.
To combat this problem, specialists recommend the use of germicidal soaps to kill bacteria on the skin, topical antibiotics instead of moisturizers, and hair removal, since hair is responsible for more sweat production.
In the most severe cases, bromhidrosis occurs hand in hand with hyperhidrosis (excess sweating). The solution would go through a Botox treatment to reduce sweat production or a kind of liposuction just under the skin to remove the glands.
