The drop in performance and results in which Maverick Viñales has been immersed since he won the first race of the season in Qatar , has led Yamaha , according to the rider, to change the technical chief on the Spanish side of the box, replacing Esteban García with veteran Italian coach Silvano Galbusera , who will take over the reins this weekend in Montmeló .
In addition to that, Yamaha has begun to probe the rider market in case, eventually, the remaining year of Viñales ‘ contract with the Japanese team was at risk.
“Obviously, if I were Yamaha I would too,” Maverick replied when asked by Motorsport.com if he understood that the team was probing the rider market.
“They have a person in whom they have invested a lot and it is not bearing the fruits that the team expects, I would do it too, I would test the market and whatever. It is clear that in this world you are worth the result of your last race”, he stressed.
“I have seen a big change in Yamaha and I am very confident. It’s a bike that can win the World Championship and be fighting in every race, it’s a strong bike. We got it in Qatar and the only difference with the rest is that we were able to do five days of testing there. In the other races it is 40 minutes of practice and that makes it much more difficult for us to find a set-up”.
Viñales explained that the choice of Galbusera came from Yamaha, which has him in the test team.
“ Yamaha ‘s strategy is to be able to give me the opportunity to have the same potential in every race that we had in the first one in Qatar. That is the basic idea of change and of the team. Of course I’m with them a bit on this issue, and if in the end I don’t adapt to the bike or I can’t, it’s what it is. There are many other pilots. But with this change in strategy I see that Yamaha trusts me, believes in my potential and that I can do it. So we are going to go with it, that is the important thing”, he valued.
Maverick was asked to explain if the final decision to box Galbusera was his, and if it was final.
“Yamaha believes that Galbusera can have what I need, what I need to perform at my best, it’s a team bet and it’s until the end of the year,” he admitted.
“The little that I have worked with him during the test went well. Let’s see, maybe it will cost us two or three races, but with patience. The important thing is to get a good base and a set-up,” he insisted.
“Many times I don’t adapt, I start very strong and then I go downhill. The most important thing is to go from less to more, not like now. Yamaha wants to work on it and wants to give me the opportunity to get the most out of myself. If I had been able to choose another technical boss, but I trust Yamaha and Silvano”.
When Viñales got rid of Ramón Forcada to put Esteban García in his place, the Catalan based his decision on wanting to create an environment of trust suitable for working. However, the impression now is that Yamaha has taken away his trusted technical boss.
“It is wrong to say that Yamaha takes me away. What he wants to do is help me find a setup and build up. The only thing Yamaha wants to do is bring out my full potential. Esteban is my friend and the relationship will continue to be good. I was fine with him, but the factory invests a lot of money in me and wants to get the most out of it”, settled the boy from the Costa Brava .
