Nine months and three operations after breaking the humerus in his right arm, Marc Márquez returned to take part in a Grand Prix in Portugal. The Catalan delayed his return until the doctors gave him all the guarantees that he could compete without risk, but he was physically limited.
The eight-time world champion only began to exercise, at a slow pace, at the end of January, and it was not until March 13 that he got back on a minibike after eight months away from them. The Catalan did two tests with a street model in Barcelona and Portimao, which were the last time he drove before his reappearance.
Throughout the weekend at the Algarve circuit, Márquez dosed himself and didn’t do more than six laps. In fact, during training he was seen making gestures with his right arm due to the overload due to the lack of muscle and on Saturday he even questioned whether he could finish the race.
MotoGP faces an intense calendar until mid-July in which there will be no more than a week between any grand prix, so the riders will hardly be able to take advantage of the days between trips to recover and start preparing for the next appointment.
This fact plays against the player from Lleida, whose muscles on the right side of the body have been very affected in recent months due to lack of activity and will have to gradually recover.
“Physically I already feel liberated and calm, that is already assimilated. On a mental level, I’m thinking about Jerez and how to improve and how to get one more point, but on a physical level now I have two or three days of rest, recovery. I have to be cautious at least this coming month and then there will be time during the season to start pushing a little harder on the physical side”, explains Márquez in an interview published by Repsol .
What #93 will have to wait for now is to train regularly on a motorcycle, since the doctors who operated on him and follow his evolution have advised him not to force the blow.
“I am one of those riders who likes to train at home, especially riding a lot of motorcycles because it is the way to improve. The bike needs a bike, but right now I can’t, we’ll just go from race to race and at home there are three recovery days. Then I will do three days of fairly light gym and try to keep in shape but without wanting to improve, without wanting to gain more weight than necessary, since the doctors have recommended that the progression of effort to the arm has to be step by step, “he concludes. .
