Profeco warns: Avoid these cat food brands

Are you feeding your cat well? Profeco analyzed 33 brands of croquettes for cats and identified some irregularities. Not all brands of cat food are suitable for your pet. For this reason, the Federal Consumer Protection Office (Profeco) carried out a quality study to determine which presentations are the best for the nutrition of cats.

Profeco analyzed 33 brands of croquettes for cats, to check that their manufacture and packaging complied with Mexican quality standards. Well, good nutrition and digestibility for pets depend on this.

What are cat croquettes made of?

First of all, Profeco illustrated in the above the ingredients that the croquettes are made of, the vitamins, amino acids and minerals they contain.

The dough with which they make the croquettes is made from cereals such as corn, rice, wheat, oatmeal and meat flour from chicken, pork and beef and/or fish.

For this reason, they contain vitamins A, D, E, K, Choline, B1, B2, B3, B4, B6, B7, B9 and B12. In addition, they contain glycine, methionine, taurine and thyronine, all amino acids required by cats. And, finally, they contain the following minerals: selenium, magnesium, sodium, yttrium, iron, calcium, manganese, copper, phosphorus and zinc.

What did Profeco’s quality study analyze on croquettes?

Profeco focused on reviewing the digestibility of each brand of croquettes for cats . Digestibility is a criterion that determines the nutritional value of food, it measures the level of utilization of nutrients. The ideal digestibility value is around 80%.

In addition, it analyzed the information that, in the labeling, each brand gives the consumer: label, nutritional content, feeding guide for portions, warnings and recommendations, commercial name, legends of use, country of origin and batch and expiration date.

Analysis results

Mexican brand Grancat ‘It’s not truthful’

In its presentation of 2 kilograms of complementary food for adult cats, this brand “does not meet the minimum declared protein content, so it is not true, and may violate the Federal Consumer Protection Law,” Profeco said.

They do not contain meat and confuse the consumer

The Kitekat, Minino Duo, Nucat by Nupec, Purina Cat Chow (in adult presentation), Purina Gatina, Purina Felix, Purina One, Minino Plus and even Whiskas brands were negatively rated for “confusing the consumer.” Well, although illustrative images with meat ingredients are presented in their packaging, they actually contain flour, indicated the Profeco study.

Regarding this statement, the National Council of Manufacturers of Balanced Food and Animal Nutrition declared that advertising with images of the type of protein (beef, fish or others) is only illustrative. But that this does not imply a lower quality of nutrients:

“Proteins of animal origin, whether dehydrated or fresh, are of the best quality and provide the nutritional elements that are taken into account in the design of the products, as well as other equally important ingredients such as fats, grains, vitamins, minerals. , vegetable proteins among others”.

False “stress management”

The Nupec Super Premium Feline Adult Indoor brand indicates that it is a food that is used for “stress management” in cats. But it does not technically demonstrate this statement, according to Profeco, in breach of consumer protection regulations.

They comply with international standards

The good news is that, despite the above irregularities, “cat and kitten foods are designed to be their only source of nutrition. All the foods analyzed meet the recommendations of the American Association of Food Control Officials, which establishes minimum nutritional requirements.

Finally, Profeco gave the following recommendations for choosing cat food:

  • Have a veterinarian recommend the food, based on the cat’s weight, age, and breed.
  • Take quality into account. Although it offers high levels of protein, this does not mean that it is highly digestible. Consult an expert.
  • Consider performance. It depends on the metabolism of each cat, so it is better to observe if it is used 100%.

See if the croquettes suit him.
