Leclerc leads FP2 in Hungary and McLaren surprises; Alonzo, 6th

After a first free practice session in which Carlos Sainz was the fastest of the 20 drivers on the Formula 1 grid for this 2022, the single-seaters of the highest category of motorsport returned to the asphalt to compete in FP2 , 60 key minutes for the strategies for next Sunday’s race.

At the end of the last practice session on Friday at the Hungaroring and with the threat of rain that could jeopardize the category program for this Saturday, Charles Leclerc set the fastest time with a 1:18.445 , ahead of an amazing Lando Norris and his teammate, Carlos Sainz .

Behind the top three, Max Verstappen finished fourth, just over two tenths off the Monegasque driver’s time, while Daniel Ricciardo, in fifth position, confirmed McLaren’s good feeling at this 2022 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, who will retire at the end of this season, recorded the sixth and seventh fastest times of the day, while George Russell was the only one of the two Mercedes able to break into the top ten with an eighth place behind nine tenths of the Monegasque.

Sergio Pérez, again further than expected and with not very positive feelings, had to settle for ninth place, ahead of Valtteri Bottas who closed the top ten positions, being the last rider to be below second in difference from the best time in Free Practice 2.

Summary of Free Practice 2 of the Hungarian GP 2022 F1

From the first minute of action on the track, all the single-seaters took to the Hungaroring asphalt to start their race simulations in this second free practice session.

The Ferraris quickly moved into the top positions, with a best time of 1:18.911, recorded by Charles Leclerc on medium tyres, the same compound that the vast majority of drivers had chosen, except for a few hard and two sets of tires. soft in the Williams single-seaters.

An indication that the times were not a great reference at the beginning of this FP2, was to see the number of laps that all the drivers accumulated on their tires before returning to the pits, carrying out race simulations with a lot of gasoline to have a better idea about which tires will be the most suitable for Sunday’s race.

After completing the first 15 minutes of Free Practice 2, practically everyone returned to the garage with an average of eight or nine laps behind them. Leclerc held the lead, with Sainz almost half a second behind and Verstappen 0.743 seconds behind. In the middle zone, Vettel and Alonso led in fifth and sixth place respectively.

A few minutes later, Alex Albon, who had pitted for a new set of softs, caused the first yellow flag of the session after losing the rear of his car at the end of the main straight. Meanwhile, Hamilton was surprised by the almost two seconds that separated him from the best time in FP2 with the same tires as the Monegasque driver.

Arriving at the equator, the vast majority returned to the track and did so with soft tires, which caused changes in the time table. The first to give the surprise was Norris, who took first place with a 1:18.662. Alonso, meanwhile, was placed third, just over three tenths behind the British McLaren.

Leclerc quickly reclaimed the top spot, also on softs, posting a 1m18.445s. Ricciardo confirmed the good feeling of McLaren and was placed third, two tenths behind his teammate. In turn, Sainz also improved on soft and took third place from the Australian, two tenths behind Leclerc.

Max Verstappen, a few thousandths slower than Sainz, was positioned fourth with his Red Bull, while Checo Pérez could not get past eighth position, behind Alonso and Vettel.

While Hamilton struggled to get into the top ten positions, Russell improved his times and with a 1:19.355 he took eighth place from the Mexican Red Bull driver, who returned to the pits with bad feelings.

With 15 minutes remaining in Free Practice 2, almost all the drivers returned to the pits to take off their softs and try the mediums and hards again in an attempt to collect more data for the Hungarian Grand Prix race.

In the last moments of FP2, no one improved their times and there were no major anomalies either, so Friday’s day ended normally and, apparently, all the teams managed to complete their test programs, key if finally this Saturday the action in runway is compromised by rain.
