The Aston Martin rear wing that could break the rules

The new Formula 1 regulations for this campaign intended to say goodbye to the traditional interaction between the endplate and the wing, with a more curved union between the two elements.

This was designed with the idea of reducing the importance of the vortex, to minimize the interruption of the air flow and to favor the great objective of this new regulation, that the cars followed each other closely.

For the Hungaroring weekend, Aston Martin has introduced a new rear wing design that could jeopardize the main objective of the new technical regulations.

Its rear wing has a unique arrangement in the most advanced part of the endplate that allows the main plane to rest on it in a more traditional way, thus increasing its wingspan and also the downforce that can be generated.

The vertical presence of the endplate above the mainplane (fin) is an anomaly of this new regulation and is possible thanks to the presence of the rolled section in the form of an apostrophe that has forced designers to reinterpret its radius and curvature. .

To control the airflow path and pressure distribution around this area, the team has also widened the rear of the endplate where it intersects with the trailing edge of the main wing, so they both work better.

This has also been caused by the design constraints posed by the transition between the endplate and the top wing, as the designers have not been able to find a design that is similar to what they have done with the main wing junction.

It is a very elegant solution, but the FIA must now analyze it and try to reformulate the regulations to prevent any further development that goes in this direction in the future, because it goes against the objectives of the new Formula 1 technical regulations to 2022.

For Aston Martin this is a new achievement, as those at Silverstone have been characterized for many years by finding innovative ways of interpreting the regulations.
