The Aprilia rider, fully involved in the brawl for the title, hammered the stopwatch this Saturday morning at the ‘Circuit’, where he set a new absolute track record, by lowering the previous record by one tenth, in possession by Fabio Quartararo since last year.
Second fastest was Johann Zarco, the fastest of the Ducati contingent, who put four of his Desmosedici in the top five.
Behind the French came Jorge Martín, third, two tenths behind Espargaró; Pecco Bagnaia (fourth) and Jack Miller, who finished fifth.
Behind the Italian, winner of the last Grand Prix at Mugello, was Quartararo (sixth), the current champion, who for the moment is riding through Montmeló with more problems than he would like.
The seventh was Luca Marini, who seems to have taken the good momentum after finishing the sixth last Sunday, while the eighth place was awarded to Pol Espargaró, who in this way was able to get out of a delicate situation, in which he got into the start the session, as a result of a crash.
Alex Rins was the ninth fastest, half a second behind the first, while Fabio Di Giannantonio, author of the pole last Saturday, closed the group of runners with a direct pass to the second qualifying screen.
Of those who stayed out, it is worth mentioning the figure of Maverick Viñales, who could not make the cut by only ten thousandths, and that of Joan Mir, 13th, whose best lap was seven tenths behind Aleix and almost three behind Rins, his partner in Suzuki.
Franco Morbidelli, meanwhile, continues to go through his particular way of the cross, and was stuck in 15th place.
