When the organism becomes ill, our body undertakes a tough battle against the causes of the disease and that requires an extra expenditure of energy, hence we feel slower and more tired. Therefore, adding the extra stress of playing sports while sick could be dangerous if a person suffers from heart problems. However, there is nothing wrong with exercising when symptoms are "above the neck," for example if we have a blocked nose or a sore throat, according to Keith Veselik, an expert in Primary Health Care at the University of Loyola (USA). "In that case you just have to bear in mind that your energy levels will not be the same as being healthy, and demand less of yourself," emphasizes the researcher.
According to Veselik, symptoms that should make us rule out physical exercise entirely are fever, chest congestion, body aches and pains, diarrhea and vomiting, or feeling dizzy when we get out of bed.
